ARTHOUSE OF IONIC FUTURISM

"We are being made clones in a world of commercialism... for what would be the shepherd without his sheep... being led to the slaughter." In a world of co-opted creativity and a city of overwhelming artistic potential, one local artists shines as an eccentric among intellectuals. Her work reflects myriad social influences, media, and techniques, all wound together in a 'psychotic' manifesto that leaves one bewildered, amused, and intrigued all at once. Her name is Dalana Castrell and she is the future of Austin art.

Ionic Futurism, an expressionist movement created by Emilia Cleopas over the past eight years, combines mythology, religion, politics and abstract expressionism into lively pieces of visual splendor. Scientific, polemic and subversive, the movement is explained, "Sub-atomic particles in Chromatic-Ionic-Orbs in all plasma cubes are being used to predict the future... the Geometric Future." Pieces hung in the Arthouse of Ionic Futurism come in various sizes, from seven-foot tall panels to smaller boards. All incorporate mixed media such as maps of Tucson, pages from an ancient Bible and photographs of human eyes. Each piece is visually stunning and begs the onlooker to contemplate the various images, messages and techniques at work. Dalana's work ranges in price from several thousands for the panels to $60 for a limited edition T-shirt signed by the artist.

Dalana Castrell was reborn when she moved to Austin, TX. She shed her skin and the name that graces most of her art. The woman once known as Emilia Cleopas, who has been painting since she was 20 years old, has been a successful artist for over a decade with shows in Bermuda, New York, California, Arizona and now Austin. She has gathered influence from every location she has called home. Growing up in New York City, Castrell was exposed to various musicians and artists, the Studio 54 disco scene, an underground graffiti movement and even rubbed shoulders with Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol. Now more grounded and seasoned, Castrell passes her knowledge onto a willing audience.

Visit Castrell and her family at the Arthouse of Ionic Futurism at 830 W. 3rd Street, Suite 1140. The gallery opening will be held on April 19th from 6 to 10PM and will be catered by Capital Brasserie. Come with deep pockets and a sincere interest in modern art. Can't make the opening? Visit the Arthouse website at www.ionicfuturism.com where one can peruse the artist's gallery and shop online.
